Most termite treatments are already no-tent

People search for no-tent termite treatment because they have been quoted a tent fumigation, or they fear one, and they want to know what else exists and what it costs. The most useful thing to know first is that the tent is only ever on the table for one situation: a drywood termite infestation. Every other termite problem in the US is treated without a tent as a matter of course.

Subterranean termites, which account for the large majority of US structural termite infestations, live in the soil and forage up into the wood. It is injected directly into accessible galleries and kills on contact, but it leaves little lasting residual, so it is priced and scoped like spot foam rather than as a whole-structure treatment. It is not a substitute for a tent on a widespread infestation.

Every no-tent drywood method shares one weakness: it only treats the wood the crew can physically reach. Spot foam treats the gallery the inspector found. Bora-Care borate protects the framing the crew could brush, spray, or inject. Localized heat raises the temperature of the room it is set up in. A tent, by contrast, fills the entire sealed structure with gas that penetrates behind stucco, into wall cavities, and through finished surfaces no crew can open up.

That is why the honest decision rule is about confirmation, not preference. If a qualified inspector can verify that the drywood infestation is contained within an accessible area, a no-tent method resolves it and saves the vacate, the bagging, and often a good deal of money. If the inspector cannot confirm the boundaries, and drywood galleries could be sitting in inaccessible framing, then a no-tent treatment risks leaving a live colony feeding and reproducing while the homeowner believes the problem is solved. That is the worst outcome: paying for a treatment and still having termites.

A reputable operator will tell you when a no-tent method is appropriate and when it is not, and will decline to certify a Section 1 clearance on a home sale if they cannot vouch for whole-structure coverage.
