Termites enter at the perimeter, so that is what gets priced
Homeowners search for termite treatment cost per square foot because that is how flooring, roofing, painting, and most other home-improvement work is priced. It is a reasonable instinct, and it is why this page exists. But for the most common termite treatment, the per-square-foot frame quietly misleads, and understanding why saves real money at the quote stage.
Subterranean termites, which cause the overwhelming majority of US termite damage, live in the soil and enter a home through the foundation. A liquid barrier treatment (Termidor SC and its equivalents) puts a continuous band of termiticide in the soil around the outside of the foundation. The crew trenches, and where there is a slab, drills and injects, along the foundation perimeter. Nothing about the interior floor area changes how much of that perimeter work there is. What matters is the number of linear feet of foundation the crew has to cover.
This is why two homes with identical floor area can carry very different quotes. A 2,000 sq ft single-story rectangle has roughly 175 to 200 linear feet of foundation perimeter. A 2,000 sq ft two-story home stacks half the floor area on a smaller footprint, so it might have only 140 to 160 linear feet of perimeter, and it costs less to treat despite being the same size. An L-shaped or sprawling ranch of the same square footage can exceed 220 linear feet and cost more. A single per-square-foot number cannot capture that, which is exactly why operators quote per linear foot instead.
The honest way to use a per-square-foot figure is as a sanity check, not as the basis for a decision. If the blended figures on this page put a typical liquid job around $0.40 to $1.25 per square foot and an operator quotes you $3 per square foot for a straightforward liquid barrier on a rectangular slab, that is a signal to get two more quotes. But the number you actually negotiate on is the per-linear-foot rate multiplied by your measured perimeter, plus the slab-drilling premium if it applies.

Because the ground is open before the slab is poured, there is no trenching, drilling, or patching, which makes it the cheapest termite protection a home will ever receive. This is the one subterranean method that is genuinely area-based, because the applicator treats the whole soil column under the footprint.
